CSIRO also examined the 2023 to 2024 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey to understand broader habits. The agency found that women aged 40 to 55 consumed about 35 grams less protein than the optimal target. CSIRO sets its stated optimal level at 1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. Only one in three survey respondents reportedly consumed protein at that specific level.
The survey concerns members of a specific diet program rather than a population-wide study. The participants may differ from the general population in motivation, dieting history, and health status. Half of the respondents said that following the Total Wellbeing Diet had improved their overall wellbeing. CSIRO describes its Total Wellbeing Diet as a 12-week, high-protein, low-glycaemic-index online program.
Scientists developed this system through more than 20 years of clinical research. The program uses a food-group approach rather than relying solely on calorie counting. This framework incorporates a daily indulgence as part of a non-restrictive approach to healthy eating. CSIRO directs readers to a free Protein Calculator, but the agency states that there is no single target suitable for everyone.
The transition through menopause affects the entire biological ecosystem. Sleep disturbances, changing stress levels, and shifts in daily routines all influence appetite. CSIRO Research Scientist Dr Gilly Hendrie said that simply eating less is not always the answer to midlife weight gain. She noted that adequate protein can help manage appetite while supporting muscle mass, strength, and physical health.
Environmental and behavioral factors strongly determine how well the body uses nutrition. Preserving muscle is crucial for midlife muscle and metabolism. A 2026 meta-analysis of 41 randomized controlled trials involved 3,141 participants. The research found that resistance exercise significantly improved muscle-specific strength.
However, the effects of nutritional supplementation alone were inconclusive without that physical stimulus. Muscle preservation is especially relevant for individuals managing their environment through modern medical treatments. A 2026 review reported that skeletal muscle accounted for 8.5% to 24.5% of total weight lost in studies of GLP-1 receptor-agonist therapy. Losing too much lean tissue can compromise physical capability over time.
This makes protein for sustainable fat loss a vital consideration alongside any weight management intervention. Stress and poor sleep frequently complicate the menopausal transition. When adults experience fragmented rest, their appetite regulation often shifts toward highly palatable foods. Adequate dietary protein helps provide a steady sense of fullness during these challenging periods.
While the 1.2 grams per kilogram target is a helpful benchmark, it is not a universal medical requirement. CSIRO states that individual variables heavily influence specific dietary needs. People with kidney disease, complex gastrointestinal conditions, or other chronic illnesses often require different approaches. Health status, physical activity, and total energy intake all change what an individual actually needs.
Increasing protein alone does not guarantee changes in body composition for every person. A 2026 systematic review evaluated 15 randomized clinical trials involving 1,161 premenopausal and postmenopausal women. The review found more consistent reductions in weight and body fat in some animal-protein interventions. This occurred particularly when protein was combined with energy restriction and supervised exercise.
The same review noted that plant-protein findings were more heterogeneous across the studied populations. More favorable results generally appeared when plant protein was combined with exercise. Some studies showed that whey, meat, or milk-protein protocols reduced body fat over 8 to 16 weeks. Spreading intake across meals just makes reaching that target easier for many adults. This means that individuals who prefer different eating schedules can still succeed. If someone prefers two larger meals over three smaller ones, they can still achieve their goals by prioritizing overall quality. The priority remains hitting the total daily requirement over forcing an unnatural eating schedule.
The midlife transition requires practical adjustments rather than extreme dietary restrictions. The data shows a significant gap between average protein intake and optimal targets for women aged 40 to 55. Closing this gap helps support physical function, strength, and healthy appetite regulation. The focus should be on realistic improvements rather than stressing over perfect numbers.
Instead of viewing a protein gap as a reason to panic, view it as an opportunity. Build meals around recognizable protein foods such as dairy or fortified alternatives.
